I have a solution for you but the SaltDogg Electric Hitch-Mount Salt Spreader item # 337TGSUV1B can only be used with dry-bagged #1 free-flowing rock salt or refined sodium chloride. I verified this information with the manufacturer. The weight of the sand compared to the weight of the salt is the limiting issue. If you use sand and have a failure your warranty will be voided.

The problem with spreading just sand through a spreader designed for salt of sand/salt is that sand by itself packs down and won't come out of the opening evenly to spread evenly. There are types of spreaders that can do sand alone but they all have conveyor setups. Check out the Blue Ox Blue Ox High-Low Adapter, part # BX88241. This adapter has a 7" Rise and is 12" Long. The tongue weight capacity for part # BX88241 is 10 percent of the towing capacity. For this adapter, the tongue weight capacity would be 1,000 lbs. High-low adapters were designed for flat towing , but Blue Ox said it could support your 600 lb rock salt spreader assuming the trailer hitch on your vehicle can support that much tongue weight as well.
